Love Notes: An Autumn Built for Two (Vol. 15)

Whenever I sit down with a couple to begin planning their ceremony, I always ask one foundational question:

“What is your idea of the perfect ceremony?”

And without fail, I would say about 85% of them give me the exact same one-word answer:

Short!”

We laugh, but I completely get it.

When couples tell me they want a short ceremony, what they usually mean is that they don't want it to feel long. They don't want a performance, and they certainly don't want twenty minutes of words that could have been said in ten. They want something meaningful, personal, and completely theirs.

They want the noise stripped away so they can actually experience the moment.

And there is something about autumn in Pittsburgh that seems made for exactly that kind of wedding.

The crisp air. The changing leaves. The softer light. That feeling that the world is slowing down just enough for you to notice what's right in front of you.

For me, one of the most beautiful places to experience that is the Allegheny County Courthouse.

Designed in the late 19th century, its Romanesque architecture, massive granite arches, Grand Staircase, and sweeping stone steps along Grant Street create a backdrop that already feels like it has a story to tell, and when you stand there together, you don't feel small.

You feel monumental.

That's what I love about courthouse weddings and intimate elopements.

You aren't "doing less."

You are choosing what matters most.

We can still tell your love story. We can recognize the people who helped you get here. We can include a meaningful reading, personal vows, a favorite memory, laughter, tears, or a small tradition that belongs only to the two of you. Whether your ceremony lasts ten minutes or thirty, I believe you should hear yourselves in it.

I want you to look at each other and forget, even if only for a few minutes, that anyone else is there.

I want you to hear your partner's voice tremble as they say their vows.

I want you to laugh at something that could only make sense to the two of you. (Who doesn't love an inside joke!)

And I want there to be that one little moment when it hits you and you think...

We're married!

That's becomes your newest core memory.

A beautiful ceremony isn't measured by how long everyone stood there. It's measured by what you felt while you were standing there.

So maybe this autumn, you don't need hundreds of guests, an elaborate venue, or a thirty-minute ceremony to make your wedding feel extraordinary.

Maybe, all that you needed is crisp Pittsburgh air.

An old but beautiful courthouse and your favorite person standing across from you.

A few words that actually mean something.

And a ceremony built for two.

Because whether there are 2 guests or 200, my philosophy remains exactly the same:

I put the YOU into your “I do!"
